Reuse and Conversion

We see reuse and conversion as one of the most rewarding aspects of our practice — the opportunity to give existing and historic buildings a new life while preserving the qualities that define them. Our approach begins with a deep understanding of a building’s fabric, proportions and character, ensuring that any intervention respects the authenticity of the original structure. Whether we are adapting a barn, mill, warehouse or listed building, we design new elements that are clear, purposeful and sensitive in their integration.

With strong conservation roots, we navigate the technical and historical complexities that come with older buildings, from structural behaviour to heritage requirements. At the same time, we apply contemporary design thinking to create spaces that feel functional, comfortable and relevant to modern use. This balance allows us to craft architecture that honours its past while supporting the needs of today.

Projects

Old Market Hall, Shrewsbury

We were commissioned to oversee the restoration of the Scheduled Monument, and to convert it into an arts cinema and café bar. OMH has now firmly established itself as a centre of artistic significance in one of Shrewsbury’s most historic buildings.

The Buttermarket, Shrewsbury

As a founding trustee of the Howard Street Conservation Trust, which saved the building from demolition; Andrew Arrol was central in it’s subsequent conversion. The Buttermarket is now hailed as Shropshire’s biggest live music and events venue.

Orchard Cafe, Belmont

Set in the beautiful grounds of Shrewsbury Cathedral, a new extension was built at basement level to provide a purpose built space for a café and function room. Extensive landscaping created an outdoor seating area, with pedestrian access and car parking.

Barsett Cottage, Longnor

Originally utilised as a barn with a Hayloft, and then purely for storage, full planning permission has now been granted to complete a residential conversion with works scheduled for completion in 2026.

Updates to follow as work progresses.

St Mary’s Place, Shrewsbury

The approved scheme at St Mary’s Hall, Shrewsbury transforms a historic former church hall within the town centre conservation area into three high-quality townhouses.
