Project Details
Johnson Hall is a complex heritage-led project involving the sensitive reconfiguration and reuse of a substantial historic property to secure its long-term viable use. The overarching objective was to enable the building to function as a single cohesive family dwelling, while addressing legacy issues arising from its former subdivision and mixed-use occupation.
Historically, the property had been divided into a main house, five residential flats, and associated commercial premises, resulting in fragmented layouts, compromised circulation, and incremental alterations that diluted the clarity of the original building. The project therefore focused on reversing this fragmentation and reinstating Johnson Hall as a unified residential home.
The proposals were carefully developed to balance heritage significance with practical living requirements, removing later interventions where appropriate, rationalising internal layouts, and improving connections between principal spaces. Throughout the process, close attention was paid to preserving historic fabric, maintaining legibility between old and new elements, and ensuring that alterations were proportionate and justified.
The approved scheme now enables Johnson Hall to operate as it was originally intended: a single family residence, fit for modern use while safeguarding its architectural and historic significance, and ensuring its long-term stewardship as an important heritage asset.
