Testimonials

“Andrew Arrol was Surveyor of the Fabric to York Minster from 2006 to 2020. I was fortunate enough to work with Andrew and his team between 2017 and 2020 in my position as Director of Works and Precinct.

Andrew is undoubtedly one of this country’s leading cathedral and ecclesiastical architects. Andrew’s ability to navigate the complex permissions process to secure the necessary consents is reflected in the confidence both Historic England and the Local Planning Authorities place in Andrew’s experience and expertise. This is a position taken equally by many Diocesan Advisory Committees across England, and in my case, the Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England.

In recognition of Andrew’s contribution to the history of York Minster, the Chapter of York made Andrew Surveyor of the Fabric Emeritus. Andrew is the first past Surveyor to be given such an honour.

I would certainly recommend Arrol Architects Limited.”

“As the former project manager and now current museum director for Llandudno Museum & Gallery I can highly recommend using Arrol Architects. Their expertise and experience of working with buildings of historic and architectural importance gave myself and the trustees great comfort. Our buildings were circa 1860 and part of the conservation area. Therefore, the exterior Victorian detailing to both the buildings was important to maintain the integrity of the streetscape. Later works and damage to the façades had to be addressed and this was managed very successfully, so much so to the untrained eye the conservation work is undetectable.”

Dawn Lancaster, Director & Curator, Llandudno Museum

“Although we had originally engaged Arrol Architects to project manage the work, what your company did was so much more. In enhancing the design, the end result achieved is more attractive than we could have hoped for. We were very aware of the constraints that a Listed building imposes and were very impressed with the way the Practice was able to work within those constraints.

“Tayler Davies was our main contact. He looked after us very well – in communicating with us, in keeping the various contractors on task, and in coming up with ideas to improve the original design. His colleague, Ben stood in for him when he was on holiday and kept the project going. We would happily recommend your company, especially to those who have Listed buildings.”

“I worked with Andrew Arrol and Rob Green for five years on the £22m award winning Lincoln Castle Revealed project. This included both new build and conservation work and I always found them great to work with and incredibly sensitive to the building. Always thought that appointing them was one of my best decisions!”

Mary Powell, Programme Manager Lincoln Castle Revealed, Lincolnshire County Council

“Arrol Architects came very highly recommended to us and we have not been disappointed. From the outset, our project was not a straightforward one, requiring imagination, creativity and a real ability to bring on board the various conservation agencies, as well as the planning authorities. We have worked closely with Rob Green, who has been a master at all these elements. We are demanding and strong-minded clients and Rob has been patient and willing to listen to our own ideas and demands, incorporating them into his wonderful design, where possible. His assistant, Robert, has also been an invaluable support and his ideas have been much appreciated. All in all, the process so far could not have been better.”

”My husband, Louis de Wet, who bought Wenlock Abbey (a Grade 1listed medieval building) in 1983, used to say: “Genius usually comes in a surly package. Andrew Arrol is the exception”

For over 30 years, Andrew and my husband worked in close partnership to restore and enhance this most remarkable building. Andrew’s extensive knowledge of historic architecture, together with his expert eye and practical understanding of the skills needed to sympathetically. yet robustly repair an ancient building must be almost unparalleled in this country.

I would say that any historic building  that found itself under the aegis of Arrol Architects would have its future assured.”

Gabrielle de Wet, Wenlock Abbey

”I have been involved with Andrew Arrol and his team at Arrol Architects since 1992, when I took over the ownership of Combermere Abbey.  The seven listed buildings, from Grade 1 to Grade 2 were in either advanced disrepair or derelict.

We have worked on several of the restoration projects together, all integral and vital to the saving of this historic estate and re-establishing its listed buildings as an integral part of its 21st century future.  This involved complex quinquennial reviews and the successful planning permissions to ensure the North Wing on the At Risk Register was  finally restored and removed in 2016.

Andrew and his team have been instrumental in making this happen.  Their reputation as leading heritage architects was key to forming important relationships with planners and heritage organisations.  They supported me and gave excellent advice and design guidance.

They have also managed to successfully integrate the importance of preserving our heritage, with innovation and forward thinking design for a variety of buildings.”
