Castlegates House

Castlegates house is a significantly important building adjacent to the grounds of Shrewsbury’s Castle. Its garden is overlooked by Laura’s Tower, a popular destination for visitors to the historic town.

As such, Arrol Architects’ rear extension to the house required to be extremely sensitive to its location, whilst also fulfilling the client’s desire for a contemporary kitchen extension.

The exterior of the extension is a striking addition to the property. The slate and timber used are traditional materials that sit well within the historic setting, and yet have been used to create sharp and clean lines that cut into the garden space. Internally, the French windows extend the kitchen out into the garden during the day, whereas when the sun has set an intimate space can be created by lighting the fire that is central to the kitchen and dining space.
